Default Diesel water pump noisy or is it?

Something is not sounding right on my dads 75. It's sounds like a dry bearing but trying diagnose which one is proving difficult. The water pump looks a pain to replace as there is no room. Hope it's not that on its way out.

Is it not the crank pulley ? pour some water over it, if it goes quiet then that is a likely suspect. I am busy making a tool to remove mine.

A failing crank pulley and water pump pulley can sound similar. This was the knocking of my water pump on the way out:

With the belt off you can feel for any play or roughness in the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, tensioner or idler pulleys.

Changing the water pump isn't such a bad job, just takes a bit more time due to lack of access.

We took around 3 hours for a waterpump change on my friend's ZT - it wasn't what I'd term an easy job, but I've done worse.

Usually waterpump bearing failure (the usual failure mode) will result in the pulley appearing lob-sided - the auxiliary belt on the diesel puts a lot of stress on this bearing, so when failed it'll show symptoms quickly.

Pumps aren't too expensive, if this is your problem:

Well the water pump has completley failed in style, water everywhere on the side of the m62. Managed to get the car home and about to set to it. Whilst I'm at it should I look at changing anything else?

Yes - I would also say the thermostat plus the ring.

Also the auxiliary belts if they have not been done before.
