eBay was always a good starting point in the past

18 months ago I had a lot of help from Reebs in choosing new maps. I picked the TeleAtlas over Navteq because it was cheaper, understood UK postcodes, and included a disc for major routes in Europe.

For this summer's France trip I fancied more detail and found www.kolumbus.de on ebay offering 2011/12 all Europe in detail from Navteq, which gives me a brand new UK disc.

Big advantage of Navteq over TeleAtlas is that it seem to have 4 or 5 times as many specific locations - schools/colleges, sports centres, supermarkets. Destination entry is easy enough without postcodes, and Navteq seems to suggest 'odd' routes less often.
For me, the Navteq is worth the extra money.

That said, it was slightly annoying, on my first big trip with the 2011/12 edition, for it to be unaware of the new A421 link between the M1 and Bedford. It will be interesting to see what it thinks of the A3 Hindhead tunnel.

Not sure but I think you need a MK4 sat nav computer for an up to date disc as it's on DVD Rom and the MK3 computer is a CD unit? Perhaps i'm completely wrong but someone will clarify i'm sure.

It's OK, CDs updates are available - that's what I just bought.

You just need to be careful that Rover 75 (1999-2005) is listed when you are buying discs for the factory fit SatNav. It usually says they are for Hi-Line (LCD display), but they work in Lo-Line - instrument panel display - just the same. That's what I've got.

And of course be careful to buy DVD maps for the Mk4.

The Tele-Atlas disc is now only available as part of a 10 CD pack for Europe and costs £126

Tele-Atlas Europe 2010/2011 & Major Roads of Europe - VDO Dayton (10 CD)

The Navteq UK and northern Europe one costs £99 and is available here

Navteq North Europe - VDO Dayton non C-IQ CD v. 2011/2012

Cheaper alternatives can often be found on ebay, but be warned, they are seldom genuine originals.

Hope that helps

Default Postcodes on Sat Nav

Not sure if I'm using my system right but as a new ZT owner my sat nav doesn't take postcodes, I've just checked the CD and it is a 2003 version, does the latest update use postcode?

Yes it depends on the disc use you use. The later Navteq discs support this feature, but only for the first 5 digits I'm afraid.

Having said that, 5 figure postcode search is much better than none.
