Default Traction control

After marvelling at the "Quality German engineering" of the traction control setup, I did a search and established that the little gears in the motor are prone to failure. Mine sort of twitched during the self test - it is clearly energised but not enough to move the butterfly.

So I ordered a replacement.

This came and I fitted it today only to find nothing was any different.

Then I did what I should have done and hooked the motor up to 12v to find it works fine.

So does the old one.

So what appears to be happening is that although the self-test is working, it's not doing it for long enough (or perhaps weirdly not providing enough current) to move the gearwheel and operate the cable.

So now I am a bit stuck as I am not 100% sure how the self test should be working, and I have 2 TC motors, both of which work fine from 12v but neither will work on the car.

I even tried disconnecting the cable - but the motor still doesn't turn, just twitches.

Is there a relay running this? Couldn't find one specifically for the TC.

The car starts and runs so it's not the main relay.

Doh!

I did some more reading from the various posts that came up here from the search.

That led me to look at the traction control position sensor. It had nothing plugged into it - fine, I thought, I obviously missed this when I was connecting up the engine electrics.

Then the penny dropped - the replacement engine didn't have TC.

This appears to mean there's no connection for the sensor.

Do I really have to strip off the whole engine loom and swap it for the one from my old engine?

EDIT - no I didn't, took a few parts off and found the plug - connected it and bingo, no warning message.

It does solve the mystery of why the TC suddenly stopped working after 5 years of inactivity I suppose.
