Default Fan problems

How can i tell if my fan is packing up? A couple of weeks ago I noticed a strange noise/rattle that was keeping time with the engine. Last night I went off to tesco and the noise has got louder and the fan seems to be working very hard/fast. It was a cold night and I only went a total of 5 miles but, the fan was very audible, even with the heating etc switched off in the car and increases in speed if |I rev the engine a little. The car did NOT overheat or anything, the temp reading was normal as always.
Does this sound fan related? Many thanks for any advice you can give

Perhaps I should mention that the car is a 2000 W reg 2 litre V6 with 109000 on the clock.

The fan is electric so engine speed is not relevant or at least the noise won't rise and fall in time with the engine.

I am wondering if you have a drive belt that is delaminating. I think you need to lift the bonnet and see where the noise is coming from

I was thinking more along the lines of the one for the alternator or the waterpump.

I don't think cambelts give much notice. You'll know when the cam belt fails though. The pistons and valves have a party and Christmas is cancelled!
