Default Camera query

My daughter's camera has started playing up, it s a compact digital, when you switch it on,it switches itself off again straight away. It's not batteries as we have changed them. Was bought for her birthday last year, so it's about 4 months out of guarantee

are you using duracell, or a cheap batteries? Some pound shop batteries will do this.

What type of camera is it, and type of batteries does it take?

another potential issue could be the lens assembly. Look straight at the camera, and does the lens barrel look askew? If it does, the lens has been knocked slightly and can cause this too.

I will explain what I used to do for my customers when this was the case, just in case it helps you or anyone else in the same situation.

If your lens barrel slides out when it is switched on, but after a slight knock, it may slide back in again. Most manufacturer repair centres will replace the complete assembly rather than repair. This will NOT be covered by manufacturer's warranty, and in a lot of cases will write the camera off.

With this in mind, I warned my customers, as I am about to warn you. You may make things worse, but the thinking is, it would have had to be replaced anyway. So be warned lol.

It is a crude method, but it was 90% effective. I have three cameras here still operational after it! Make a mental note of the angle at which it is pointing. Then switch the camera on, as the lens begins to try to slide out, a gentle but firm grip on the barrel, and snap quickly in the opposite direction. Do not be too forceful, as you are simply trying to crack it back into its gears, which are made from quite a brittle plastic.

It is totally straight, the lens goes in and out no problem, the batteries are duracellAA, and the lens comes out upon switch on, but then camera cuts out and you have tO,press switch again to get lens to retract

try a decent batteries Standard Duracells are not suited to digital cameras.

I would suggest Energizer Lithium batteries. They are expensive, but perfect for digital cameras. For rechargeable, batteries, use NiMh type, 2000maH or greater. If they do not work, it may have moisture inside, or a bit of fluff/dirt inside.

When they run out, do not throw them out, they will still be great for a remote, or clock. A bit like a car battery, a camera seems to use a lot of power to start up. It is for this reason, standard Duracells, are not suitable for digital cameras.

These are what I would suggest, but you would need to buy the charger separately. Alternatively, this bundle is superb value for money.

Another option for you to try Richard and that is to reformat the memory card. A well known similar issue existed with the GoPro action camera when using a non recommended memory card. If your cam is up and running, great news

Best batteries I have used on high discharge items are Eneloop, rechargeable and do not lose power over a stored period.
If sorted then all well and good.
