Wireless connections at the pub.
I got involved trying to show a mate how to connect his lap-top to the Wi-Fi at the pub. (It's dead easy mate, an idiot can do it! I've used mine here often enough.)
Well, we found the router and logged on OK. but could not connect to his ISP. "Page not found" or words to that effect. Other chap in the pub was connected OK. so the router was working. So I guess that there is a tick box somewhere that needs checking or something equally simple, but what I don't understand is that it connects fine on my router at home and obviously on his at his house. He is with BTinternet if that is relevant. So, any ideas where I have gone wrong? Apart from the obvious of going to the pub. in the first place. |

The BT homehub set up uses the router address for DNS and "search domains" home. Check that both these parameters are blank and try again. This is what it looks like on my network pane.

What a superb Idea, Tallking to your "virtual mates" as well as sharing a beer with your "none virtual" ones' Is this common place yet? I know many notels now offer wireless connections but not heard of it going on down the pub?

I was just showing what The BT setup does to your tcp/ip sttings. I was thinking that when you try to use the pub network your friends machine might still be hanging on to the DNS server and search domains. Hang on, I'll fire up VPC and have a look at the network set up on XP Pro. |

I've used my Archos 604 wifi in the pub with great success, only downside is the onscreen touch keyboard. Especially after one or several pints of real ale...

Some of our Pubs and Holiday Centres now have this facility.
Think its there for Tourists more though. The local library's 20 machines are always in use too. |
