Default File recovery

I have been to a small local Charity this morning to try to help with some IT problems, all except one were either explained or solved.

There are about 20/25 PCs controlled by a Small Business Server using Active Directory. The have lost one vital file and they don't do any backups even though I warned them about the dangers last January.

Can anyone advise on the best course for data recovery please? I haven't had to do anything like this since DOS ruled when there was good software about for this sort of thing.

Thanks in advance.

Malcolm

Thanks for the reply Nisfo.

They have just 'accidently' deleted the file with no backup so I don't think system restore will help. The recovery software looks promising and not so expensive as I thought it may have been, it becomes nasty if there is a need to send the hard drive off to the professionals.

Whenever doing Data recovery,
Do not install Recovery Software on the Hard Drive you wish to recover data from.
Quite often you could write over the top of deleted files.
Recovered files should also be recovered to a separate drive for same reason,
when trying to do this yourself.
Best of luck but the only guaranteed way is specialist recovery if Important, but that does cost.
I've said it a Thousand times before, BACKUP, BACKUP your data.

I use recovery software on a usb key, and back up to an external drive, success rate is usually about 50% as 9 times out of ten the customer has already tried some other method and overwritten thier own files.

as for back ups? hmm.... if only people would

still, keeps a few shillings in the pocket
