Classic car insurance.

My coupe is now eligible for a classic car insurance policy and the quote is coming in a third cheaper than the renewal price for the standard policy it is currently on.I know NCB no longer applies on a classic policy which could be of concern should I wish to return to a standard policy,but why would I.

Apart from that are there any disadvantages of a classic policy? Be pleased to hear particularly from anyone who has a classic policy on a car they own.

It doesn't apply to my classic policy but limited mileage is the only one l can think of.

My coupe is already limited to 4,000 on standard policy and the classic one is offering the same so no change. Thanks

My old Sunbeam (1955) is on classic car policy, £85 a year but as said no no claims and limited mileage.
Downside: only me insured to drive and i'm not covered to drive other vehicles third party.

Interesting Mick. Can you tell me what the qualifying factors for 'Classic' are these days? It's now approaching 40 years since I was selling those things!

That's very good Dave,I wouldn't think it's likely to be taken off a classic policy so NCB not an issue.And you probably have third party cover for other cars included in the policy for your daily.

I think they are judged on an individual basis to some degree Ray.I had the renewal for my standard policy this morning and it had increased by £100.Gave them a call but they were unable to reduce it.I rang a couple of other brokers who came back with quotes higher than my renewal price,but both said they thought they could get it on a classic policy.One of them has now been able to quote me £90 cheaper on a classic policy than my standard renewal and I'm still waiting to hear from the other.


I'm not sure what the criteria is to qualify as a classic but obviously age is the main factor,my coupe is 25 years old this year.They said things like limited mileage,garaged overnight,driving history,current NCB and mainly weekend only use all helped.They apparently weren't too concerned that the car is heavily modified including performance wise.I Got the impression each case is udged on it's merit.I believe an agreed value is aso included subject to supplied pictures and mileage verification.

I have my MGB insured through Buckingham Insurance. It’s actually gone up to £85 this year.

They did have an office in Ripley, but they closed it recently. Their other office is in Clowne.

Might be worth giving them a call.

I have had a modern classic policy from Lancaster before which has maintained and gains no claims. You can get agreed value with it as well. The company is Markerstudy which i think is Lancaster. If keeping no claims is important it may be worth considering.

Lancaster is a Broker, other Brokers can access Markerstudy.

They look ideal Dave,I like the idea of it being insured locally,I'll give them a call Monday.The Classic quote I've had for the coupe already is with Highway who are part of the Allianz group,and it's still in the hundreds,with mileage restricted to 4k.I think the performance mod's will have some bearing on price.They asked if I belonged to an owners club,which I do,and that also counted in my favour,so worth mentioning that when getting quotes.

Thanks for that,yes Lancaster are well respected for classic insurance and I have heard of Markerstudy.I was initially concerned about the NCB issue as I have 15 years on this car,but logically once on a classic policy it should remain on one.
