Rust appearing on cill
Prospective purchase. Evident line of rust to rear nearside cill face. Forum search suggests Tom Hobbs can provide good replacement panels. So a couple of questions: any idea on the cost of repair (and where to have it done in the West Sussex or nearby); is it probable that the rot will be affecting the inner cill and jacking point, meaning a bigger repair (not been mentioned in recent MoTs).

The inner sill and lower wheelarch may need some attention so it's essential to find the right bodyshop with traditional fabrication skills. This is more important than the price. I eventually chose a two-person local place and the labour was £400 + vat with me supplying the Tom Hobbs parts (£117.50). I hope this is what you wanted to hear. Simon

I had both rear sills done for circa £500 with Tom's panels.

I had a Tom Hobbs nearside rear sill repair panel welded in today by a local welder, he charged me £90.

Took this just now. I know the sill on this car *should* be silver but I painted them both black a few years ago when I had the other side done as a matter of personal preference, and because stone chip paint is tougher than car body paint and easier to touch up as required.

With bodywork, it's important to be aware that the initial appearance can give a false sense of security. It's what lies beneath the paint that matters and the passage of time is needed to reveal that.

No photos, I dropped the car off and went to work, but I'd already said that if the jacking point or anything else needed work then to do that. He told me it was all fine. He did the offside sill two years ago and that was the same, there's no rust coming back there and I've jacked the car up at that point since(admittedly I do use a spreader block between the jack and the sill, always have done).
A lot of the work Johnny the Welder does in on classic cars older than mine. I once saw an entire floorpan he had fabricated for a 1964 Mini and it was superb. He works from a very unassuming lock-up on an industrial estate in Rugby so I imagine his overheads are quite low and in any event he comes across as the type of person who is not particularly interested in earning more than he needs to survive. His business is called Hunters Lane Garage and if you look on Google, although he doesn't have a website, there are 11 Google reviews, soon to be 12 when I add mine, and every single one is a five-star review. Certainly if any Rover owner in the Rugby area needed welding doing I'd recommend visiting him for a chat at the very least, and make their own minds up. He's always happy to chat about old cars (he very much likes my 75) free of charge. |
