Loving the panel fit at the back, not been shunted or anything.

Price is about right though

The hydraulic tappet might cost £4.50 but he fails to mention you'd need the engine out to change it! Can't even take a rocker cover off with the engine in situ.

Yes you can That's why the bulkhead panel is removable.
There's a thread about the tappets over on the 260-ties and being replaced, engine in situ.

But with the engine problem and shock absorber, I wouldn't put any money on it until I would be sure I can get the parts

"So basically I'm prepared to loose £3000 for the sake of a £4.50 part, shocker and a bit of labour"

The car hadn't has an mot since jan this year.

Worth a punt? My head and heart are saying no

Good point and I do agree but he may well have been quoted for an engine removal for the tappets- guy lives in Battersea and London garage labour rates ain't cheap! Not that I've had an engine out on a V8, but not so long ago me and my bro in law had an engine out on a Volvo D5. It was a £3.50 part (popped a core plug but to get to it was to drop subframe, remove engine and gearbox to replace core plug behind flywheel - total time spent over 12 hours), so if his garage have labour rates of £70 per hour (not unusual in central London) he may well have had quotes not far off 2k? The local Volvo main dealers had quoted £2.5k for mine. Total parts bill for mine was £350, and that included new cambelt, water pump etc (made sense to do it at the same time).

At the advertised price, if I were in the market for a v8 and with a few friends in the trade I'd certainly be prepared to have a serious look.
