Spyware
During a routine scan, Norton flagged up the fact I had some spy/adware called dialer.generic. I've no idea where it came from and Norton was unable to remove it so I manually removed the file which claimed t be written by BT. I have not got any BT stuff on my laptop so it i a mystery as to where it came from. My concern is that it is supposed to dial premium rate numbers, is it likely I'm going to have a massive phone bill?? I wasn't sure it would be able to dial numbers as my internet connection is done through a wireless router. Also, now I've removed this file I did another system scan and it came back clean, will I be safe ding my online banking??

Hi thanks for that, but to be honest computers aren't really my thing and that doesn' make much sense. Anyone be able to break it down a bit so I can understand it a bit better.

You'll be safe online banking, nor will you have massive phone bills, as the dialer is for 56k dial up, not broadband.
You need to download, use and update regularly a couple of spyware utilities. Google 'AdAware' and 'Spybot'. Thoroughly recommended and free utilities. |

Short for NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- Cleaner. It's frightening what it actually finds, it clears the cookies you dont want but keeps the one you need. Excellent program, download it while it's still free. My guess is they will cash in before long..... |

And a bit of sage advice from one long in the tooth Internet user (me) Don't get too paranoid... You can end up having so much antispyware on your PC that you spend too much time searching for stuff that probably is not there
all I use is: AVG (free) Zonealarm (free) Spybot S&D (free) I update and run them once or twice a week at the most (or if I get suspicious about someting) and in the past year (on both XP and Vista) have had no problems at all. And avoid those filesharing programs & Torrents your kids love (Limewire etc) as they are open doors if you don't know what you are doing. I also have a wireless router with its own built in firewall, and that helps although I use Zonealarm to keep an eye on stuff trying to get out
