Erratic position - highline gps
Is it just mine, or does anyone else have a problem yesterday and this morning with the GPS position on their highline? Following erratic instruction yesterday afternoon (luckily I knew where I was going even if the nav didn't) it's carried on the same when I tested it on the way into work this morning. Switching to the map see's the car's position jump all over the place, and the direction just keeps spinning. This results in it putting me on the right road but going the wrong way (when the routing catches up) and keeps telling me to make U-turn. .
I'm just wondering if this is something that's affecting all these units following the recent Sun activity or if it's an indication of a known fault with the highline nav (mk3).

Unashamed bump as it's already likely at the bottom of a long list of New posts .

Used nav on mine yesterday while testing intravee and didn't notice anything untoward.
Might be worth going into diagnostic menu and checking your sensors are all working ok. I'm no expert but from what I have read it could be a duff wheel sensor not giving right data for 'dead reckoning' position.

Thanks for the link, I did go into the hidden menu this morning and checked the gps and sensors and all looked ok whilst parked, I'll have to rope a passenger in to watch the sensors while I'm driving and see if that throws any light on it.

No worries. Think wheel sensors you have to see while in motion obviously to see change. Your on the case .

After a couple of hours trawling bmw forums, I fou d a good pdf on the mk3 nav that describes the proper installation procedure. This includes gyro calibration, whi/h occurs after a full power off and restart ( disconnect batery or nav). The calibration happens if the car is left with the ign in the first position for 15 minutes followin install. Gave this a go at lunchtime and it seems to be keeping track much better now. Fingers crossed :-)

You say the direction keeps spinning, change of direction (ie turning) is apparently sensed by the "gyro" , no gyro = keeps turning??

Gyro was giving a reasonably constant reading close to the 2500mv +- 400mv specified. However I believe this was slightly off calibration, hence the gyro telling the computer that the car was turning constantly even when travelling dead straight. the problem with that is the computer uses this to fill in the position blanks and compass direction of travel hence alternately travelling at 90 degrees to the true path across neighbouring fields and then travelling the opposite way - when this happens the computer tells you to make a 'U' turn!
We'll see if it stays on calibration this time. Went OK on my journey home last night.
