The wiring of OBD sockets is standardised on Pins 2,4,5,6,7,10,14,15 and 16. The rest are used by car manufacturers as they wish.
Your earth pins are not standard, so I'd assume you have mis-numbered them. The earth pins are always 4 and 5 as TS indicates. The BMW socket will follow these standards as well. If you could put up a drawing or photo with your socket/pins numbering it may help.

The pinout assignment of unspecified pins is left to the vehicle manufacturer's discretion.

7.K line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4

Pay some attention to the mounting. On my ZT the connector is mounted under the LSM but 180 degrees rotated. Row 1-8 now being the lower one

I'm a bit out of touch with all this, but from memory of when I found my socket loose in the car(mid 2004 CDTi), it only had three wires on it. My engine diagnostics work fine, but nothing beyond that.

I understand my diagnostics unit can also look at the CanBus. So if I were to bring my 75's CanBus wiring over to the diagnostic socket (as per the above), might it work?

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

The correct fitting is indeed 'inverted'. It's not unknown to find it in the 'typical' orientation though.
