Peugeot-Citroen agrees deal with GM to buy Vauxhall-Opel

For those who are wondering - "The deal has raised fears of job losses at Vauxhall's UK factories, which employ 4,500 workers."

Just a change of ownership from one foreign owner to another. But anything for a scare news story even from the Beeb. Plants might close, but that would have always been true.

So the Tories have done to Vauxhall, what Labour did to MGR. Peugeot will asset strip the Company and then close it. I give them 4 years max. So in the space of 15 years, the Politicians have let the three oldest and largest manufacturers of volume cars in the UK, all close their factories, Longbridge, Dagenham and now Luton, disgusting.

Whilst I fear for Vauxhall's UK plants the situation is different from Rover in that the company is a going concern and essentially a US owned German run subsidiary. Under current EU rules there is nothing the Toires can do to save it hence why were are better off outside of the EU.

I suspect you are correct in what you say will happen though but its different to what Labour did to MG Rover - they could have nationalised/propped it up like the French did with Renault/PSA via the back door.

I hope JLR will now see the benefits of a new Rover brand to fill in the mainsteam gap that will be needed if/when Vauxhall's UK plants close

The same excuse was used when Labour let MGR go to the wall. Amazing how we follow every EU Regulation to the letter in this Country, yet the French and Italian Governments pour billions into their car manufacturers and no one says a word. Thank god we'll be rid of the EU soon.

Or rebrand and use the factories as a means around possible import duties and tariffs post brexit.

Everyone here is forgetting that PSA are buying OPEL/Vauxhall. Go have a look at what percentage of car sales in Europe and the UK are Opel/Vauxhall respectively - they ain't going to strip the brand. Would you risk losing a MASSIVE customer base to Volkswagen AG?

Economies of scale will be made, without a doubt, and no one can foresee what will happen with the UK plants but I doubt very much that we will lose the Vauxhall brand from our roads, and likewise Opel in Europe.

I do expect that Vauxhalls will be built on PSA platforms which, considering how their cars drive these days, may not be a bad thing!

The industry really is full of surprises! A pepper mill manufacturer buying a GM offshoot!
