Tax Man is a modern day highway man
Just got a letter from the tax office telling me that next year my tax code is 27L, meaning I can earn £273 before I start paying tax, I am not self employed and earning millions of pounds, although I do get a decent wage and my military pension.I though that the tax free allowance for 2016/17 was 1100L, meaning that I don't pay tax on the first £11000 earned, but I think that they think I am loaded and have millions
Will be calling them tomorrow and giving them WTF are you doing. I am absolute fuming |

Have you had a change of job or employer recently? Sounds like it's an emergency tax code.

No, I have been at place of work for 17 years, and last year paid over £10k in tax and £4k in NI contributions, so how can my tax code by so low this year I wonder if they want me to work, and pay all my wages in tax so that can make so many mistakes, and then not be answerable. I have looked on the web and found a calculator for tax, and they have definitely made a massive error Stu |

I think they sometimes issue those stupid codes so that you will complete a tax return and so keep them up to date, (and in work)

I can't think who could be on a tax code like that? Maybe it's a genuine mistake these things do happen. Give them a ring, they've always been okay with me and paye issues.

All bar 663 quids of my allowance is lost from having my State Pension, then I get the 663 quids allowance to spread on my BAE Pension and my 2 other small private ones ..and my part time job .
Hopefully will get another 1060 or so transferred from My wifes allowance . Might have been tax free then , but getting walloped a bit now innit!! C

Been self employed for 35 years .
Paid my taxes for 30 of those years but not a coin for the last five as my income fell like a stone . With an allowance of Just over 10K i wont ever pay tax again. Considering what this waste of a space government do with our taxes i am very happy with my situation. |

I have a private pension, and the state pension, so the state pension is deducted from my tax allowance, giving me a very low tax code which is applied to my private pension. Might something like that not be the issue here too?
