![]() Just watched a half hour program fro ITV, What car to buy.
What a rubbish program, about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. People talking about how good the gizmos in side the car was. I expect all the gizmos are available with petrol and diesel cars. I think only 1 person thinking of changing their car was advised to stick with diesel. One couple who were petrol heads were given a Telstra electric car worth over 100k just so they could see the acceleration. One women commented on how her fuel bill went from £60'ish to mid 30's but how long would it have taken her to cover the cost of buying the car. My wife just changed her car for a 2nd hand one, it will take about 8-10 years to recover the cost. long range currently not possible with the cars used in the show. nothing about a fully loaded car with luggage or god forbid towing a caravan. real shame they did not take the opportunity to really discuss which cars are appropriate for town, motorway, long distance, short distance towing etc. They did highlight the problem of charging cars, lack of charging points, lack of off street parking making charging problem even worse macafee2 |

![]() Electric cars only any good for local commute.
Hybrid petrol probably cleanest and best choice if you want to feel good. Diesel for long journeys and towing. Hydrogen will be the future. Just my opinion. also, that program was pants. |

![]() The only way electric cars will work is when they have a 500 mile range in real world conditions and can be recharged in a short time.
Tesla's might be impressive things to drive but in real world conditions there range is 200 odd miles and they need at least 45 mins plugged in to travel another 125 miles. Petrol hybrids are probably the sensible solution at the moment but I would want to see how long the batteries last before I splashed the cash on one. What good will it be when the batteries need replacing? |

![]() I've always wondered what would happen to the motoring holiday if we went electric. I think a canal barge would be quicker and more fun. ![]()

![]() I wouldn't fancy trying to put 350 AA batteries in the little channels, one springs out and the lot are rolling along the gutter.
