True.
I worked out how much money I was spending on tobacco as I rolled my own, with a menthol filter. The filters I bought in bulk, a box of 20 at a time, Swan extra slim menthol. About every 6 months I bought them @ £11.27 from Amazon. Tobacco was 50g Gold Leaf JPS x2 per week, £36.20 Per year Tobacco was £1,882.40p + £22.54= £1904.94p It is shocking how much money I was setting fire to

I stopped smoking 3 years ago and it's the best thing I ever did I feel so much better now and I have saved loads of money. It's amazing how much people spend on fags a year as I used to but it's there choice. I will never ever go back to ciggies again rgds mark

Really sorry to hear you've had a bump in the road of life and health, I'm sure things straighten out for you again!
Like so many have said, good on you for giving up the ciggies, and I really wish you all the power and strength to keep off them! I'm having a little bit of a 'mare in the health stakes myself, so I know how you must feel, tablets for life just become a routine I find as I've got myself a set for a different reason, but just think of it as "a tablet a day keeps the doctor away" and they are SO much easier to take!

Neil - your experience is a fairly close mirror of my own. Back in February 2005 I lit up my pipe (for what turned out to be the last time), put 50p in a ticket machine in a local car park - and promptly had a heart attack (there's no truth in the rumour that this was down to the shock of parting with 50p!). Like you, I had pains in the arm, someone tightening a wide belt across my chest and chronic nausea - and apparently I was greyer than my hair, which is saying a lot.
Within two hours, I'd had a trip to hospital under blues and twos, an assessment, and a stent fitted into my chest (via the femoral artery at the top of my thigh). Luckily, I was not allergic to any of the usual drugs used in these circumstances and was able to leave hospital a week later, have a month off work (no driving either) and then go back to 'normal' - but what was normal?
I think what I'm trying to say is that, in many respects, heart problems can be dealt with, can actually extend your life (because you're pushed into a healthier lifestyle) and don't really interfere with the way you go about your business. Five years ago I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic - but with the healthier diet I had already adopted, plus a few more adjustments, I have been able to keep this under control without any more pills to rattle around inside me. My sincere best wishes to you. Rod

An update on how things are progressing or not as the case is.
Being on my own most of the time I don't like sitting around doing nothing so I have been doing what I did before. Out shopping, well I tried to had a funny turn in Lidl's which gave me a scare and had to sit in the boot of my car for about 15 minutes, I had bought a bottle of water so was drinking that, I had forgot to bring my pump spray with me which would have sorted me out. A very kind lady took my trolley back for me and brought back my token, it's very humbling when some complete stranger does this for you. So I haven't been out shopping since, instead have done a Tesco Home Delivery for this week/weekend. On Monday I had the radioactive scan appointment at Torbay Hospital the letter said to a allow a couple of hours and I didn't drive as I thought it was best not to. Taxis are expensive but a necessity at times which cost me £36 return. For the return journey the first taxi that turned up was a Toyota Auris Estate, I couldn't get in, there was no room for my knees, so the driver ordered a larger one a Citroen C4 Grand something, can't remember the rest, that was much larger and easier to get into. Unfortunately they couldn't do the scan as I can't put my left arm above my head (had an accident in 2002) all the nurse had done was shave my chest. They said, I had to be able to put both arms above my head and keep that position for 20 minutes. There is another scan available to me but I don't know if they can do that one either. Now I'm waiting to see what happens next.
