They were called this when they were used as troopships during World War II. They were painted battleship grey and were so fast that they were rarely seen by any other ship on the Atlantic - hence the 'ghost' bit. The two liners were equivalent to twenty ordinary troopships and carried more than two million wartime passengers. In July 1943, she crossed the Atlantic with 16,683 ‘souls on board’.
