![]() I was in Court today.
One defendant was an 18 year old unmarried mother of four kids. She was charged with benefit fraud and obtaining money by deception. £4000 worth of dishonestly obtained benefit amongst other fraudulent offences. In addition, she has a 4 bedroomed council house, but has her mother keep the kids whilst she sub-lets 3 of the rooms at a rent of £125 per room per week. She pleaded guilty. She was also charged, separately, in relation to her kids. When the local authority investigation officers called at the house regarding the fraud she was not in but they heard the children and were concerned that they were unsupervised so called the Police who broke in and confirmed that all 4 children, oldest less than 4, youngest 3 months, were in the house with no adult supervision. When the woman returned some 4 hours later she calmly said that if 'the government' couldn't be bothered to pay for a child minder while she went to sign on, why should she bother? She certainly didn't want "the brats" cramping her style. Apparently, her mother was ill and unable to look after the children. She also asked me if she could claim for child care while she was in Court. The case was adjourned for reports. Last edited by Raistlin; 17th December 2008 at 18:50.. |
