Due to the close coupling of the five drive wheels the middle axel wheels never were flanged as the overall drive train distance could have caused the locomotive to derail itself passing over a short radius point. For this reason the centre wheels were not flanged.
These living beasts were beautiful modern locomotives just don’t cut it. I seem to remember the reason that was given was the electrification of the railways. Yet today in the end of the second decade of the 21st Century and Diesel is still the tractive Force for more than 60% of all tonnage moved on the railways today. Still not looking good.
Been soaking in Plusgas in a "well" around the joint and with the weight of the car on it for almost a week. Remains rock solid and "ringing" when hit and the double forked joint separator technique hasn't worked - yet . I'll leave it soaking for a few more days and see where that goes. Cheers. Andy. |

SUCCESS.....
Thanks to the generosity of a Club Member (you know who you are ) with the loan of a US Pro 6029 12 ton ball joint separator the offending joint is off. https://www.amazon.co.uk/US-PRO-Hydr.../dp/B07DGCSGKK Bit of a pain as the US Pro is one seriously big piece of kit so the anti roll bar had to be disconnected as did the track rod end to steering rack connecting rod. Even then there isn't space to use the hydraulic part, just the good, old fashioned fine threaded bolt. Doing it up good and tight with a 19mm ring spanner then a couple of good thwacks with a 4lb lump hammer and..... BANG - she's released. I guess the soaking in Plusgas helped but this is one heavy duty separator and I'm happy to recommend it as nothing else I've tried even came close. All I need to do now is put the new one on . As has been said before this is the best forum with many, many true gents and vast amounts of knowledge - freely given. Thanks all. Andy. Last edited by AndyN01; 24th April 2019 at 07:08.. |
