p fold mirror "chatters"
Hi
Not posted for ages as basicall the car never seems to go wrong ! Powerfold mirror "chatters" and needs helping hand to retract into the "in" position. just like some teeth are missing/worn on the cog. Guess I need a new motor or are the cogs seperate and can be fitted to existing unit ? Any advice on right parts and most impprtantly - anyone got the said item for sale ? (also posted this in wanted section) Thanks Matt - brighton

There has been some discussion on the matter, and it seems that the worm gear wears, and at the moment there is no one able to reproduce, althuogh there are forum members trying to find a solution.

Hi Rod,
As you rightly say there is ongoing work on these, The worm drives do wear We thought we had found a BMW replacement but although the kit looks remarkably similar they do not fit Some members are still pursuing this though

In my case the worm gear shaft had moved away from the crown wheel due to wear in the casing. Bodged it by placing some thin shim behind the worm gear shaft to take the play out, and greased it up. It was a bit fiddly to do.
That was a few years ago and surprisingly it is still working fine. Mike |

It is me who is trying to source the replacement gears and i am hoping the solution is not far away but that wont help you in the short term
The " chattering " is a sure sign of gear wear but as said above the casing is also known to wear which possibly throws the gear out of mesh in the first place For now your only solution seems to be to acquire another pf mirror or you could fit a non pf And hang onto the pf until the repacement gears are available
