Paypal - is this normal proceedure?
As some of you may be aware, I'm now taking a £15 deposit on the handbrake compensators I send out, just to ensure I get them returned. So far this deposit scheme has worked very well indeed.
I also use the same account for purchasing various things on Ebay and if there are not enough funds in my account, I have it linked to take the payment directly from my credit card. As said, the deposit refunds have worked smoothly, up until today that is when there wasn't enough in the account (£9) to pay a £15 refund. I just expected it to claim the difference from my credit card as usual, but instead it was asking for another account to be linked to PayPal, or a fund transfer to be made into my PayPal account. I did the latter, but it involved a lot of extra hassle, with phone calls from my bank to confirm I approved the transaction. I had thousands of pounds of credit available on the credit card, so why didn't PayPal just claim the extra as usual from my credit card, or at least let me approve it being taken from the CC? What possible difference is there between making a refund for an amount already paid to me and a purchase from Ebay?

Possibly because your credit card may be nearing its expiry.

Because PayPal will be charged a fee by the credit card issuer, which they will not allow for a refund. This is why they try to get you to link a bank account and always put that as your default payment method. They then charge a seller the same fee and make more profit.
