Smile CD.

I have a multi function music centre, tape, disc, radio, cd. Everything works except the cd player, when I put a disc in, the cd drawer closes and a couple of seconds later opens again. I have tried cleaning the discs but it is still the same. Any tips please?. Thanks, John.

Hi John,

Try a cd lens cleaning disc.
It could be the laser has got dust etc on it and cannot read the table of contents.
It could also be the loading belt worn and not allowing the draw bridge to raise.
This would need replacing so would need a competent person to carry this out.
Worst case scenario is the laser has gone low emission and can no longer read, it would need refocusing or replacing if necessary and should be carried out by a qualified engineer.
Try the disc first, you should be able to pick them up from any good electronics shop, Maplins etc

Whip the cover off and have a look.

Microfibre cloth and a small amount of Isopropyl alcohol if the lens is really mucky.

Which is fine but you need to really make sure you are taking static precautions if in contact with the laser.
A proper anti static wrist strap would be ideal or at the very least rubber soles on your shoes and touch an earthed appliance before hand to discharge any static
Using anti static buds and proper optical lens cleaner is better still and also cleaning and regreasing the sled is also recommended.
Only moisten the bud or cleaning cloth, don't saturate it and use very gentle circular motions to clean

Thanks for the tips, I bought a cd/dvd cleaner. The drawer closes then opens in a couple of seconds. So no joy there. The cd player is in an all in one music centre so it might be a bit tricky opening it. John.
