i have a 53 cdti club that was leaking when full but it turned out to be the pump fastening ring under the drivers side rear seat...(got 2 full turns on it) the fuel does not come into the interior but runs down and around the tank and looks like a pretty bad leak...
it may be worth checking before buying a new tank |

my money's on it being the above too.
Arent they plastic? - you'd really know as soon as you'd damaged it, if you had.... (I meant the tank itself...) Last edited by pondweed; 3rd March 2008 at 07:09.. |

It's a metal ring and screws down on to a rubber sealing ring.

Update:
just lifted seat and removed 4 screws holding black cover on. Located metal ring, I managed to turn it no more an inch (moved slightly by hand then I used a drift to move it a little further). I did notice a slight discolouration around the area. this could have been done by a possible pump removal in the past... I am not sure this will cure the fault as the fuel appears to be leaking from similar position (only guessing) on passengers side, however could be tracking across. problem is it leaks until between half and three quaters full then stops. now if it only leaked when full then I could see the metal screw possibly curing the fault. I hope that it is a seal as any damage caused through driving would come from beneath and continuesly leak not stop when it does!! Fingers crossed I will now wait until tomorrow... Many thanks to you all once again. Regards, Carl |

You are a legend It was the left hand side that was leaking (fingers crossed) reason being.. The pump looked like it had recently been replaced, the locking ring was only hand tight and the seal was all scew wiff underneath. Had the seal removed and refitted as looked ok. re built, re gassed and re tested... All appears to be leak free Thanks again and to all the rest of you guys, you are all worth your weight in gold. regards, Carl |
