Hi Darren,
I've been reading your earlier thread where you complain of "steam in the morning" suspecting a coolant leak from an inlet manifold gasket. The expert advice was that this is unlikely on a V6. It then emerged that you have definite evidence of a leak in the 'V': Quote:
Later you say: Quote:
I think you're being too hasty to condemn the engine. Can we have some more detail please, then we might be able to save you a lot of hassle and money. Simon

I agree, have you stripped the engine to see if the liners have dropped? Or has someone just told you that is the likely cause?
There are many causes to problematic V6's, although I am yet to read about any dropped liners. |

Dropped Liners
My car is in Hough Green Garage Widnes a so called Rover specialist, engine went in with a water leak, I said it was the inlet manifold and he said it was the thermostat housing and pipe work, but I checked in-between V and there was now water, after picking up car I drove home for about one mile and the engine overheating came on and the engine was pressurising, coolant out of the expansion tank. I got it recoverd back to the garage, on inspection they said its know the head gaskets, so I told them to get on with the job, they quoted me £750 to £850 with cambelts done all so. couple of days later, phoned me back and said the engine is knackered it needs a new one as the liners have dropped, and that it is in bits in workshop, and for him to do it as I am on a budget, its not cost infective for him to do it. so I have given up and I am now not fitting engine to it am selling it for parts, it is mint, I am hart broke 2004 model 53K 2.5 v6 Con se Cimarron Green + all my new mods lights , stainless exhaust etc only new

I'm very sorry to hear this Darren, but the head gaskets won't have failed (they don't on the KV6) and the liners won't have dropped either. Your engine isn't "knackered". The garage is incompetent.
Get your pride and joy recovered to a company recommended by this forum and get the thermostat housing and pipework properly fitted and the cooling system correctly bled and I bet you your engine will run just fine. One overheating incident isn't going to write it off. Most importantly, please take advice from this forum when garages give diagnoses, and don't agree to any work until you've had time to consider that advice. Simon

like you I've had problems in the past with a so called 'bmw specialist' who couldn't find what turned out to be a very minor issue with my car ! mine was eventually fixed by a forum member (mike noc) which cost me nowt ! take the car to a forum member/dealer + it'll come right in the end m8 regards chris |
