Default Intermittant ABS fault

Hi all,
It looks like a tricky one. I have an abs fault: sometimes the light comes on and the speedometer goes, sometimes the light comes on and the cruise control goes, and most of the time the abs kicks in when braking at low speed on dry roads, so not caused through wheel lock.
Am I right in thinking problems with the abs pump. I have taken the battery off to see if a reset will cure it. Am not hopeful. Must get this sorted quickly as the other half is making suggestions about replacing the car, because it is becoming troublesome.
