When cats are scared, they tend to emit a substance from their pads with a certain smell. This leaves a trail behind them where they step while fleeing.
If the cat wanders in the same area again and smells back this odour, it would know it's a dangerous zone and move away. The horn idea is not that bad

It's not a mere cat!
I thought I had been suffering from the same problem, an unruly cat leaving prints on my car overnight, until I was up late one night and heard a little noise outside the window and decided to investigate. It wasn't a cat but turned out to be a Beech Marten, which are common in the rural areas around here (Austria) but not usually in town.
Apparently they are well known for climbing under the bonnet and chewing anything and everything If anybody here has any bright ideas to deter them then I'm listening. The locals reccommend getting a dog to urinate on your tyres (!) or spreading dog hairs or wire mesh on the floor around the car, neither very practical. |

When I first caught a cat parking its dinner in my garden I played a game of catch with it. Unfortunately it didn't quite catch the golf ball but returned it by putting its posterior in the direct line of flight so that the ball would rebound. That particular cat has never come back for another game of catch, or to lay a cable in my garden again. I really am a dog person. |

The gadget show had some great items on test during the week, especially water pistols that are powerful enough to shoot water up to 30 yards.
Could be the answer to your problems and the cost to you would be very small.
