A year or more ago I had a similar problem when the hard drive failed on my laptop. I found a forum where they described a way to recover the information and files to put the operating system back on a new hard disk exactly as it was before. It entailed saving the all important "hives" etc over onto a new disk. It was very daunting for a non-techie, but it did help me to save all the files that I needed.
A copy of Linux (I'm sure it was Puppy Linux) was downloaded and mounted onto a USB pen drive. The laptop was booted from that pen drive (in Linux) and it didn't change anything, as all changes could be saved to the pen drive. I plugged in a USB external hard drive and the Linux OS recognised the laptop hard drive and the external hard drive. Instead of going through the complicated process of making a copy of the original Windows OS I just copied all the pictures and documents etc over onto the USB external drive. I don't see any reason that it would not work in the opposite way with your crashed hard drive in the caddy. This article is similar, but using a Boot CD or USB. https://www.winhelp.us/recover-files...ppy-linux.html I have heard of people having success with putting the drive in a freezer for a few hours, but have not tried it. Hope it helps, Jim |

Just to round off this thread. Many thanks for all who offered advice. Having downloaded Recuva I have managed to save most of the important stuff. Many files were "unrecoverable" but would think I have reclaimed around 90% which is fine. I suspect most of the unrecoverable files have already been backed up earlier in the year.
Thanks again all Nige |
