All I'm going to say is stay on guard and constantly observe everything.
Age isn't issuer its the lack of concentration and how we deal with it. None of us are perfect, we all have good days and bad days. Keep on your toes.

I say that anyone over the age of 70 has to buy and ride a motorbike.-
( If he/she wants to keep the car license. ) You'd very quickly find out those who weren't paying attention to the road and other users.--- |

I think I learnt to anticipate things by driving my first car, the brakes were so spongy and frankly rubbish that I had to make sure I gave everything my full attention.

I can fully agree with that. Way back in the dim and distant past, I urgently needed a new, but quite old car on the road in order to get to work, after a full weekend working on the car, I had everything working except the brakes. Not to worry, at least the hand brake worked, so I would manage, and I did, from Monday to Thursday I managed the five mile each way journey without incident. That was until I arrived home on Thursday night. The last few yards involved a sharp drop from the main road, and a 90 degree bend to park in front of the house. Unfortunately when I arrived home, we had visitors, and an emergency stop was required. Unfortunately the hand brake cable could not take it and broke. A quick change of direction found me planted safely in the middle of my mothers flower bed And yes, I did make it to work on Friday with no brakes at all. Of course an important factor would be that there were far fewer cars around then, but I still think I learned a lot during that week, and even now, would always look for a way to steer out of trouble before relying on simply hitting the brake pedal. Much more recently, I had the unfortunate experience of sudden and total brake failure on a new 5 ton van. The body builder had positioned a brake pipe in such a way that it quickly wore through. Had I been driving in the manner of the younger generation, I very much doubt I would have had either the time nor the forethought to be able to steer out of trouble. |
