Default drilling a prt thermostat

just had a text from a mate who's on holiday in Scotland in the middle of no where , basically he thinks his thermostat is sticking causing the car to run hot/overheat , not a motor factors for miles to buy a replacement prt stat but he does have access to a drill!!! was wondering if he takes the prt off and puts a small hole in the stat on the stat side as a temp fix, allowing coolant to flow from the radiator thus keeping the car cool until he's back to civilisation !! any ideas ... its a 1.8t 75

Theoretically yes, but he'll need to make sure there's no swarf left in there, and that the (sometimes brittle) housing isn't damaged.

Rather than let it idle and overheat, cant they just drive it, ie keep revs to open the spring and allow flow ? to get him to a place that can help him out.

not if its stuck on the stat side .. it wont allow coolant from the rad hence the idea for a small hole ...will pass on the info ...
