Default stereo advice

Looking for a half decent stereo for the van, must have cd player and aux input for iPod. Don't want to spend a fortune,I have recently upgraded the door speakers ,and taken advice from Jeff as to mounting them securely, but they still f(rhymes with tart) when the volume or bass is turned up.

Currently running a Sendai head unit, which is basically a Halfrauds unit, was considering this as a replacement, thats about the limit I want to spend, opinions please.

unless you are fitting an amp and sub, it will tart at a certain point. I dont know what speakers you have, but if you didnt want to put a sub in, a pair of 6x9s or a little more expensive, 7x10s. Whilst the built in amp of any stereo will restrict the bass reproduction and have a little distortion, the physical size of the speakers will be more restrictive. If you tap the cone gentle on a 4" speaker, compared to even a 6", you will hear the difference.

If you do consider an amp, remember it will draw more electrical power than a stereo alone. When you say van, do you mean a van, or a caravan? Either way, consider keeping your existing speakers, and fitting a box with a sub and amp. You can buy pre made sub boxes and 6x9 boxes quite cheaply, made from MDF. Under seat subs (normally with a built in amp) may be another solution albeit again limited.

If it is a van, experiment careful the subwoofer location, as it could become quite boomy and tiring. Experiment carefully before securing and cutting wiring.

Also, consider a used stereo/amp, there are some bargains to be had. My own head unit Alpine 178BT doesnt have a CD player (mechless) but uses USB instead, I got it for £100 a couple of years ago, they are still £180 new! But the best thing about it, is the bluetooth. It has an app that allows me to tailor the sound to my taste remotely using my phone or tablet. The difference over using the basic bass/treble, is astounding. So if budget allows, consider the bluetooth option for that reason rather than just phone use.

That seems like a good unit Rich. To be honest, them units will all do the job quite nicely. I had a similar JVC unit in my old car and I was more then happy with it. Sound quality was decent. You've upgraded the speakers so that will enhance it further. Controls were easy to use and it looks quite decent. I normally get my gear from here. They have the same head unit as you posted a couple of quid cheaper.

thanks for replies chaps, Alan it is a van a d all that you mentioned, albeit good advice,is too much hassle mate. I don't have a smartphone,so its just to play my cds and music on the ipod nano.
There is no room for bigger speakers,or to mount amps or subs, no place to put mdf boxes either, so speakers cant be changed size wise. Rav, thanks for link, will have a look.

have a look at under seat sub wonders even if no room under seat, you should be able to place it behind one.
