Breakdown cover
Does anyone know the name of the company who charge a small monthly fee then you have to pay for repairs etc and claim the money back? I did have it but have completely forgotten the name!

Do you mean AutoAid? I used them for a few years and called them out twice - brilliant and helpful both times - happy to recommend them.
Only pain is they only insure the driver, so when my other half drives the car she's not covered, unless we were married! I'm using Britannica breakdown through my Nationwide Flex account right now. Works out to be pretty cost effective, especially after the AA wanted to empty my wallet for their renewal. I also become quickly bored of having to barter the AA to reduce the renewal price.. |

I think the one you mean is the one run by the Guild of Experienced Motorists (GEM). It is always highly rated, and I believe their address is in Forest Row. I had cover through them when they were the Company of Veteran Motorists (CVM), but fell out when they stopped issuing their famous V grille badges, as i was proud to display how many years I had driven without any convictions.

I remember my father had a VM (veteran motorist) badge on his car, shame they don't do them any longer.

I use GEM and it includes Legal Assistance. Because you get this with the breakdown cover you can delete it from your insurance. The £25-£30 you save by deleting it from your motor insurance reduces the cost of the breakdown cover. The more people living at the same address that you add to the breakdown cover the better value it becomes. If four people take breakdown cover and delete the legal assistance from their insurance the money saved almost pays for the breakdown cover. Be careful, not all breakdown companies provide legal assistance.

Arno I don't think they Auto renew. Equity Red Star are now involved. It went up from £35 to 40 something, mines due in April so will see if they raise it again, if they do it's time to shop around. Give them a ring.

If they are anything like the AA, you can expect a 10% to 20% price rise every year ! |

Autoaid no longer charge you and repay, there is no bill for normal call out now it seems.
