Default Cant find satellite signal

I get this message too often for my liking. "Cant find satellite signal". The receiver is mounted on the metal of the A pillar.

Before with my old WinC unit the receiver sat on the dash, in the center tucked under the windscreen beside the temp sensor (i think that's what it is) and I always had a signal. Is this a better place rather than mounted on metal?

The metal could be acting as a screen Glenn. Best moving to the middle of the dash right up at the windscreen.

Mine started doing this a couple of weeks ago. I was going to have a look at it but the problem seems to have gone away. Mine lost its signal while I was in Gloucester one day, I had no idea how to get where I was going but luckily it got a signal back after 30 seconds.

Mine could take a couple of miles from a journey start before it had found a signal and it was like that for about a week. Now it finds a signal within seconds.

Ive moved the receiver. Its now sitting on the dash tucked in beside the base of the windscreen. So far so good.

When you say receiver..do you mean the little square aerial with the magnetic base?
I have often wondered whether that device needs to held magnetically to metal for the signal.... anyone?
Ken.

You mean a ground plane Ken.
I'd suspect at the frequencies involved the metal base of these antennas would suffice. Certainly the standard sat nav and aftermarket ones work ok with just some double sided tape holding them on the dash. The old Win CE one I had in COA was fine till another fault put paid to the navigation section.

The sat nav signal is actually quite weak so the best place is in the centre of the dash with the screen above with a clear field to the sky. Any metal above the ariel will create problems.
