Don't take any advice from me Harry, I'm in no way qualified other than as a patient! Started taking Atorvastatin following two heart attacks in succession and after a month was plagued with incredible itching. Upper trunk, neck and head were driving me mad. Dr. suggested a reduced dose, I asked WHY? Eventually we settled on Pravastatin. No adverse effects for the last 4 years. Good luck.

You will find that GPs do not prescribe Atorvastatin as much as they used to as it is one of the most expensive statins.

I read somewhere that several companies now produce, so might be a bit cheaper now. The advice re-side effects, seems to be try several different statins. I found out what the doc had made the appointment for - they had got the results from my US. Kidneys looked fine, aorta looked fine, prostate appeared a little enlarged, which the US operator had already said when I was there - was it causing me problems? Nope none at all that I was aware of. So its just the blood kidney values they are concerned about, now they are referring me to a kidney specialist for their opinion and pharma to review if the drugs I'm on might be causing the high blood readings. They are also doing a blood test for prostate cancer, just in case. I hit her with a long list of prepared questions.

I was on the same after my heart attack, I suffered with the side effects as you described and couldn't go to work, my GP took me straight off them and within 2 weeks the symptoms had just about cleared up, I won't go back on them even though my GP isn't happy about it, it's about 18 months now and I've been ok and I can now function normally.

My symptoms cleared up much quicker than that, the very next day. The most obvious was the feeling, but only a feeling of a tremor in my left hand. The impression of tremor was so great, I was sitting on my hand when sat relaxed. The cramp didn't happen daily, only really when I tried to use tools.

There are statins on the market that do not cause muscle cramps and joint pain. Unfortunately, they are out of the NHS price range, like most other things.

I've been on Atorvastatin for the last 19 years. I had no problems to begin with but for the last two to three years I've been suffering from muscle pain, mainly in my thighs and upper arms. I put it down to getting older but reading this thread got me wondering, so I looked at the Patient Information Leaflet and discovered that in recent years I've also had several of the other listed side effects (ringing in the ears, back pain, tingling fingers etc). I've booked a doctor's appointment for this Wednesday evening in the hope that I'll be prescribed an alternative medicine that will at least lessen the symptoms if not eradicate them altogether - assuming it's the Atorvastatin that's causing the issues in the first place.

I had a mini stroke (TIA) almost exactly 10 years ago. GP sent me to a consultant, and he proscribed Atorvastatin, along with blood pressure, and aspirin medication. No effects from any of the meds - so it must depend on the person. Hope you get sorted in your case. |

I have been taking Atorvastatin for about 4/5 years after heart attack, apart from lack of energy for a couple of hours in morning i'm O.K.
I do suffer from an ache in my left thumb, which i put down as Arthritis, can never do my shoelaces tight enough.
