I work with a few Welsh Nuts!!!Joking aside, I am convinced steam could be made to work these days, we must have many years of coal still left below us....not the ghastly Open Cast type mines either.P.

There's plenty of coal under us yet.
When I was mining Potash we were at over a mile deep. Talking to the geologists they said that below us was a massive amount of coal the problem being that at those dpths it's a lot more difficult to extract. Mainly due to the temperatures at 1 mile the rock temp is 63F. The main problem is not that coal reserves are running out it's that the easily extractable coal is almost exhausted (for that read cheap enough to market against foreign subsidised coal). Anyway back to the steam engine the pollution on that one's not too bad. The worst one I've ever travelled behind was a U.S.type S160 now that really can throw some muck out! Russ

The brand new A1 class engine 'Tornado' makes its first passenger run at the end of this month, in Feburary it will travel down the East Coast mainline to London Kings Cross and back and our yard at work is right next to the track so i hope to be able to see her steam past and get some pics.
More details here.

She is also on the North Yorkshire Moors Preserved Railway for two weekends in May,
where you will get much more up close and Personal and some decent Route shots. See their website. |
