Default diesel tank return

Good morning, does anybody know how the fuel return to tank is controlled on a diesel. Should fuel be returning when the pumps are running but the engine is not,?

Hi, I don't think so as the HP pump won't be running anyway (it's driven by the engine).

When you first turn the key to position II and the fuel is cold then returning fuel goes round again in the LP circuit, although there is a small bleed off in the restrictor valve which provides a path back to the tank. With the engine running any losses are topped up by the ITP. As the fuel warms up then the cooler stat opens and fuel starts returning to the tank.

Not now Mike ,it appears to have been a sticky valve in the HP pump inlet ,many thanks for your interest.
