When cranking the engine, is the fuel pump running continuously?

The same happened to me this week. Can I ask had the filter separated? Mine had. After tightening the top and placing the clip it still did not start. Then I took the top off, noting first that there was no pressure in the fuel line and second that the seal was not visible. I fished the seal out of the bowl with a flat head screwdriver. It looked ok but I fitted a new one. Then the car started immediately. I know you have done this but if your fuel filter had definitely separated then might be worth rechecking all before looking for another fault?

New update:
I'm an idiot.

As I said earlier: I had replaced the o-ring and had only found a small piece of the old one. I didn't think any further on it, really, but with Cantray's remark of fishing the seal out with a screwdriver, I thought "what if the old ring is still somewhere in there..."

Anyway, the old, broken o-ring was still in there (it was in one piece, save the part I'd already taken out). After removing this old ring and reassembling, the car started!

Thanks a million to you all, I'm genuinely thrilled that my car works again!

Thanks for posting the solution Erik. It's information like this which is vital to keep our cars in good order at minimal cost to owners.

Dont forget to tell your mechanic - he may come across another late petrol 75/ZT with the same problem.
