Head skimming advice re valves in or out..?
Hi ..just enquiring if anyone knows of you can have a 1.8 petrol K series engine cylinder head skimmed whilst leaving the valve's in..??

I just did so, though some argue that the valves should be lapped in anyway. If the head is warped at all this may be necessary, but mine wasn't and I didn't. They took a couple of thou off simply to renew the surface. It's about cause and effect IMO.

I always have the head pressure tested and the valves lapped in while the head is of, false economy not to have it done in my opinion.

Many thanks Vitesse and T cut for quick response and appreciate the sound advice from Trikey, Cengar, Les4048, and rrobson. I may not have the time to be that thorough though.
I'm using Gosnay engineering co Ltd at Romford (who also make the head saver shims) and they pressure test the head as part of the process. They said that on the K series engines you can leave the valves in. I'm guessing you remove the camsshafts though. Really nice that this club has very helpful members..nice to get the reassurance and the advice.. I intend to use the stainless shim as I think the annealing would of been reversed by any heat looking at the fire ring Impressions on the exhaust side. The shim I reckon will give the head a fighting chance and should adhere well after the skim. I'll post what the result of skim is and what they say about the head.. Looks like it hasn't been skimmed before judging by the dimple, so fingers crossed. Many thanks again.. |

I always remove the valves & lap-in afterwards but this is just a recommendation.
Remove the camshafts & the hydraulic lifters/buckets (keep them in order if you don't intend to empty them out & keep the camshaft caps in order too). Which head gasket do you intend to use? (this is dependant on liner height). |

Hi mh007.. Thanks for the advice.. my liner height is nil ..they are perfectly level with the block .. so having read various links here I'm advised to use the Elastomer gasket. I also discussed it with the guy Dmgrs spares and have bought the full kit with this gasket.
I heard today the the head is ready and took an 18 thou Skim. Pressure testing all ok, so will also get the 20 thou Stainless shim to protect the head loss of annealing. Fingers crossed it should have a fighting chance of doing another 56k miles.. |
