The instruments can be removed by unscrewing 3 screws along the top 😎 I'm sure Steve has pictures

I am limited in what I can do… age etc!, I can’t get the blanking plug out, and would need to remove the instruments to achieve this. So I do think this is an achievable task for me. I think I can fit the thermostat.

The car is running very well, so if coolant temp is low, will that be a problem. Tha car is in good general condition, no sill rusting yet, paint work and interior good. I love driving it around the Island with my dogs on board. Went through MOT recently with no issues.
If your engine is in fact running cool then adding the inline stat should see your heating get better, but you do need to ascertain what temp the car is running at.

I bought a second hand top hose from ebay and from the comfort of inside my home cleaned the inside of the top hose so I tested the inline thermostat could more easily go inside - (it is hard to fit the inline thermostat inside the top hose if it is not cleaned inside) - and I worked out exactly what went where - before taking a saw to the jubilee clip holding the old top hose to the junction by the engine block.

Do people think this top hose would fit OK?

Just to get used to exactly what parts look like here is a top hose with the thermostat fitted where we can see the aftermarket jubilee clip holding the top hose in place after having cut off the original clip. The bulge from inside the top hose shows where the inline thermostat has been squeezed in:-

The above is the correct hose, also remember that we do help to fit these at our Nano meets, anyone whom has not fitted one before it is most likely better if you have removed the manifold first, it gives you more room to do the job.

It can be done without removing the manifold, but is a bit more fiddly takes about 30 minutes as opposed to an hour if the manifold is removed.
