Mine is running at about 79-82C in 'everyday' running. Although soon heats up to 90+ when stuck in traffic or on a motorway run. Not sure whether that means my thermo is working correctly or not really!

A few of questions for Jules, if he's got a minute to spare away from changing all those thermostats
1) What is the lowest 'acceptable' thermostat temperature? I've taken my car out for a 40 mile run and the highest I got up to was 78 degrees! 2) Does the very cold weather we're having make a significant difference? In other words, would a stat running at 78 now possibly be okay come summer (if summer ever comes...) 3) If the answer to 2) is No, then what kind of impact is this low engine temperature having on my mpg (which is very important to me!)? Or to put it another way, what improvement could I expect to my mpg by getting a new one - I've seen JDC mention a 3.5 mpg improvement. 4) Lastly, based on answers to the above, if a new stat seems appropriate in my case, could I purchase one, and you hang on to it till I can get down for you to fit it - which is maybe a couple of months away? Thanks in advance for your time on this Jules Cheers Leander |

Morning Leander
Answers in Blue A few of questions for Jules, if he's got a minute to spare away from changing all those thermostats 1) What is the lowest 'acceptable' thermostat temperature? I've taken my car out for a 40 mile run and the highest I got up to was 78 degrees! The best test I do is if the temp isn't maintaining 86-90 in top gear at 50 MPH after 3-5 miles of cruising, then you can assume Stat is out of spec. Even a new Stat might no get up to temp on short 3 mile low revs Town type journey. (not enough heat produced by engine) Our CDT tourer with new Stat gets up to Temp after 4.5 miles in Top Gear 2) Does the very cold weather we're having make a significant difference? In other words, would a stat running at 78 now possibly be okay come summer (if summer ever comes...) No and as T-Cut says, the Stat should maintain it's 88 Deg setting +/- 2 deg. Regardless of Ambient Temp. (Providing engine load is sufficient) Our ZT CDT/i sits at 88-90 Deg even with -5 deg outside, in top gear. 3) If the answer to 2) is No, then what kind of impact is this low engine temperature having on my mpg (which is very important to me!)? Or to put it another way, what improvement could I expect to my mpg by getting a new one - I've seen JDC mention a 3.5 mpg improvement. Some facts & figures here: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...7&postcount=12 Chrislloydie's very happy report here: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...61&postcount=1 4) Lastly, based on answers to the above, if a new stat seems appropriate in my case, could I purchase one, and you hang on to it till I can get down for you to fit it - which is maybe a couple of months away? If 78 deg was highest reading that's 10 deg down. Significantly out of spec IMO, plus if you like a warm Cabin...................... But it's really up to member's pockets and finances really whether you can justify the cost of replacement. For DIYers, it's a No Brainer Thanks in advance for your time on this Jules Cheers Leander

Thanks for your comprehensive reply Jules
I don't care too much about having a warm cabin, but a possible 6mpg improvement is definitely worth paying for. I've got a motorway trip to Leeds this weekend, so will give the thermostat one last chance to save itself. If it doesn't, come Monday I'll be ordering a new one - assuming you still have any left by then. Cheers Leander |
