I'm looking at 100's Rover diesels but how can I tell whether it has 130 bhp engine?

Isnt the higher bhp model the cdti where the lower powered one is just a cdt?

By driving - there is a marked difference.

It would seem that the difference between CDT and CDTi may be just the badge.

If you look in the drivers door aperture, there should be a label on the B pillar which gives the variant and the power output. A silver sticker with something like 'Rover 75 Connoisseur SE 131ps'

Is there any particular year that they were uprated or did they run both engines at same time? - I'm looking at car ads and although they often advertise '130 BHP', they dont always, and they never advertise 116 bhp.

There is a little bit of confusion as not all cars have the sticker in the doorpost & it seems more likely to me some were built as 116 & upgraded when someone ordered a 131 & some were built as 131 hence they dont all have the sticker & just to further confuse matters using CDT & CDTi to detrmine the difference doesn't work either as I have a facelift brochure at home which states all later diesels are CDTi but are available in both power outputs.
However to simplify you need to get a look at the logbook for the Variant & version numbers & then use this chart to determine what it is

I used to own a Triumph TR6 and they had either the original 150 bhp engine or the later derated 125 bhp engine, these were identified by the 150 bhp engines having the prefix CP on the engine number. IIRC.

Is there any way that the Rover / BMW engine variants can be identified?

Just checked and mine is the 116 engine, however the V5C has the car down as a CDTI, just to confuse matters.........

Here is a typical example of Car Giant 'salesman' speak when it comes to the two engines that I've had when I first started looking for a ZT.

On the 116:

"Theres virtually no difference between this engine and the 131, with diesels it not about bhp anyway. This engine will bowl along at 100 all day"

On the 131:

"If I was you I'd go for the higher power version, its so much better than the 116 and just as economical"
