Default Fuel pouring out!

Oh Dear! (I apologise, but what happened was shocking).

Parked the car on the left side of the road with a slight left-camber - smelt petrol and looked around and found coming out from the rear-left side of the car over the fuel tank.

Quickly got bloke to help me push it to the right side of the road (with a slight right camber) and it's stopped.

Must have lost at least a couple of pints of petrol...

Back to Rover ownership :-) (shaking).

Happened to me too, exactly the same didn't notice though when I parked as it was dark lost about a 4 litres in total I think.

From what I've read it's to do with a problem with the fuel filter in the top of the tank, and everyone says it's an easy fix, with an orange clip or something, but as I'm not mechanical really I've booked it into the garage to get it sorted.

Not the fuel filter issue which can be found here.

Fuel pumped out of a holding tank is at a much lower temperature than in your tank. If you fill to brim there will be some expansion as it warms up, it only has one way out via the filler. Usually we fill up and then take off somewhere using up enough fuel for it not to be an issue.

I've had the same thing happen to me, it was after I'd had the fuel module out of the tank.

So, my question to you is, have you had your module out recently?

If so, check the rubber seal. Mine wasn't fitted correctly after I refitted it.

That's far too much to be due to expansion. Sounds like a leak to me. The usual problem is a badly seated O-ring under the filter module or the fuel pump. Has any work been done there recently?
Anyway, the fix involves removal of the rear seat cushion and the inspection hatch on the floor. It's possible a new ring will be needed. All the bits available from Rimmers. If you're going into the tank, it's a good opportunity to fit the fabled orange clip (FAC) if you don't have it already. It'll save you a lot of grief, believe me.

Details can be found here: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=9108

Hallo,

I got the car on Friday so I can't say whether any work has been done on the fuel pump.

It does seem to be a seal of some sort, the leak stops when the car is on an offside camber, a little with the front up and a lot with a nearside camber.

It's at the Honda garage where I got it from - fingers crossed they can figure it out, I think I'll take it to a Rover specialist afterwards in any case to get it looked at properly.

Cheers,

Sorry, I forgot to update this thread at the time.

The problem was the rubber seal (thanks Tatts), an incorrect one was fitted and the proper one sorted it.

It is slightly annoying that the previous owner must have known this and sold the car on without letting on that this was the case - what would have happened if someone had chucked a fag next to the car...

Better late than never!!

Maybe the previous owner parked on level ground all the time, and never filled the tank up, and was unaware of any problems.

However if he did know, then he needs a boot up his backside! Like you say, a stray ciggy or a spark...
