Connect two PC’s
Is it possible to run two computers i.e. Desktop & Laptop off the same modem with cables at the same time?
I can connect both units on the cable but as soon as I disable the wire free on my Laptop I loose the internet signal. The reason I want to use my Laptop on a cable is when it’s on wire free it only connects a 54 Mbps instead of the cable 100 Mbps. |

Is your modem a router as well? If it is then you're okay but by the sounds of it your modem isn't a router.
It is possible to share an internet connection via the PC. Windows has an option to allow other users to use the PC's connection to the internet. The setup would be something like: Modem plugged into wall socket ----> PC ----> Laptop connected to PC with a LAN cable. In Windows on your PC if you run "Small Office/Home Network Setup Wizard" one of the options you can configure is exactly the one you need. On your Laptop you would then need to run the Setup Wizard again but this time tell it that the Laptop connects to the internet via another PC. Hope this makes sense - if not I'm sure between everyone on here we can describe exactly what you need to do for your equipment |

The speed at which your computers access the local network is of little moment when talking about internet access as that will be maximum 8Mbps on ADSL and up to 20Mbps on Cable (Don't know what Sky offers).
The speed of access / data transfer is only relevant if you are transferring data from one machine to the other, then the difference between 54 and 100 is important. The simplest way to sort this issue is to install a wireless modem router. Under £40.00 for. A good one. |

Thanks for the information, the system I am running at the moment is:-
Broadband from Virgin, with Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem to a Belkin Wireless G Router- 2.4 Ghz-802.11g, whatever that means. I will try reconfiguring the Networking set up though! Reset my home network and it’s all working OK now. Thanks for the help Lad’s! |
