As for thermo stuck closed, that will also be a first!

Lots of missinfo being bandied about I think..

Get Jules to sort the fan out [email protected]
Tel 0149 253 5020
Mob 0783 145 7011

And fit an in line thermostat. That "should" solve the problems...

Note:- When Jules fitted my new fan motor, he put 3 self tappers in it to stop it ever working loose...
...
Indeed, a lot of nonsense being bandied around. And this is a prime example.

Up until today this car has exibited exactly the same symptoms as mine. I even went down the same route.

1. Rad cap - new one
2. Fan - no slow speed so repair brushes.

Still overheating.
And for me

3. Thermostat and cured.

The pattern of overheating and temperatures in engine and rad were identical.

I did not have any of todays symptoms I just hope OP has not "cooked" it whilst using the car with a closed stat.

Also a nightmare for a repair. You could repair thermost and inlet manifold gaskets only find out the head gaskets need doing. From the little I have read I believe a replacement engine may be a easier option than head gasgets.
Hi pal,so you are saying its difficult to put new thermostat? In haynes manual its sounds like straight forward job...cheers
And will it make 150 miles with thermo fault?

The job is simple for a mechanic, not to bad for a a skilled DIYer but someone with no mechanical experiance might find it hard.

You would need a reasonable toolkit and some longish extensions for sockets, and I think a swivel or flexidrive for the rear of the inlet manifold.

If the thermostat is closed it will not go more than a couple of miles before overheating. If you drove it in that condition for any length of time the engine would be damaged.

As I said before, if you can drive it on an open road (not stationary) for say 5-10 miles and it does not overheat it is not the thermostat.

It's all to do with the temperature of the coolant. You could try on a cold day with the heater flat out and you may be able to keep it under 120 degrees, not that I'd recomend it, but it may be possible. also if the stat was stuck almost closed it may allow a small amount of coolant past and so not get quite as hot.

As Rocket says, why don't you try it on a 5 mile journey on the open road? Keep your eyes glued to the digital temperature display. If you get the same continually rising temperature that you've seen during your tests, it will confirm that it's worth tackling the thermostat.

Simon.
