What I did with my Rover 75/MG ZT today?

... Oh, & last weekend my brother changed the clutch slave for me while I 'helped' / changed the front brake pads

For those who know the trials & tribulations I've been having since purchasing my ZT ... too short a time after Shiner replaced the master, I was struggling to select gears yet again

Nothing to do with Andy's work, it turns out the previous owner had replaced the clutch as he'd said - a plate with detached centre was in the boot when bought so I'd taken him at his word but was having big doubts after it started having more clutch problems.

Unfortunately though, he had fitted the new (we think, still looked a bit ropey for a couple of weeks old?) slave with the pipes off the original; so it seems it was letting air into the system.

The bearing still looked pretty good but I figured it's not worth the risk of trying to swap back, seal & re-use.

Seems metal bodied slaves are still not available . Luckily my brother is a mechanic for an independent Land Rover garage so he got me a genuine Land Rover Td4 Freelander unit - identical except for the pipes but not exactly cheap.

Interestingly, his place had to re-do a series of clutch slave jobs when they used Borg & Beck parts for a while. I know these are recommended here abouts but they have switched back to fitting OEM Land Rover. Could that be a bad batch or something about their use in a heavier vehicle I wonder?

Anyway, after a bit of repositioning of solid feeder pipe, at least the Freelander part is straightforward to fit - already filled, didn't even need bleeding.

So far, so good...

Below (L to R) are: recently removed slave & ropey looking 'original' (was in boot when I bought car) - note shiny solid pipes though!

My past experiences have been pretty good on value. Depends a bit on who is on the desk (I think it's the owner's son who tends to want to make as much as possible) / if they think its a popular item (they have eBay open all the time)

I always prefer wandering around myself but you can do either there. As a bit of a guide, I think I heard somebody being quoted same price for a (non-ZT) front bumper whether removed for them or by them (but she was wearing a summer top) & they wanted an extra £20 to remove six wheels.

Not too bad compared to my time & effort on slightly over-tightened wheel nuts but they would have forced them off as there were no 'keys' inside - I had to go back on a second day with mine as I went in the Land Rover. But doing it myself meant I got to keep bolts & take my pick of the best centre covers by 'harvesting' a ZS too

Plus I'm tight!

Got my new upper arm delivered from roverlink and some door card clips so now hopefully it will be a successful roubd 2 at mot then will be much nicer to be inside by the weekend

The stuff UK folks throw away is close to unbelievable.

It's like a league of natioins there some days. Numerous Eastern Europeans filling vans with stuff to take back home. They often ask to borrow tools and I try to help when I can.

I'm pretty sure my fascination started in much the same way though I can't remember the details as clearly as you Possibly buying a new interior for my Dad's Rover P6B after the dog ate it ... yes, everything except the seat frames & one belt buckle

Completely agree with the last sentiments too. Oh, & all the 'do not climb' signs are repeated in Polish around here!

Did nothing with the R75 - it's been under wraps the past few days...

But I did Clean and Play a bit with the Ol' Smart.....

Bill, That Smart will do you proud. I have had and am in the Haynes book (unfortunately with my ex wife) but They are cracking cars and with a remap are more smiles per gallon than any other small car.

Just watch out for cracked exhaust manifolds (possibly there only fault).

MPG is awesome
