At the time it overheated the car was stationary and as soon as we noticed that something was wrong the engine was switched off.

If the coolant emptied so quickly after refilling I would say it's leaking from the bottom of the engine which to me I'd say it's the water pump that is leaking

The guys at kwik fit said it leaked from the water pump but than again why would there be water sort of on top of the engine?

No it's not from the radiator for sure.
You probably have a leaking thermostat housing too. Common on v6's

is that something serious? I had the radiator and radiator fan replaced by a garage so I will do my best to get them to cover the costs as this was caused by the overheat which was caused because the fan fell of and it wasn't cooling - do you think I'll have aproblem convincing them to get that done on that basis? any advice on how to speak to them on monday?

[EDIT] Also you don't think it would be something very serious than do you? taking the headgasket out of the equation

A leaking thermostat housing isn't really serious but once you have got the main leak repaired you will still lose coolant so The thermostat will still need repairing. If the fan has fell off then it can't of been fitted properly in the first place so I would try to get it fitted back on by the garage for free but I doubt they will fix anything else for free.

As stated in many threads hear gasket failure on the kv6 is very rare so I think your main leak points towards the water pump.

First of all thanks for all the replies, and second of all, so you're saying that I will have a hard time getting them to cover the possible cost of replacing the water pump? Even though it was caused by the fact that it was indirecly caused by the fan not working?

Ok, well I will do my best for them to at least do the labour free of charge since the water pump isn't that expensive. Thanks for all the help.
