Thanks for this Colin. I think you should carry out some systematic checking.

Does your manual air conditioning have a windscreen 'demist' button? If so, when it is pressed does the heater blower operate at maximum speed? If yes, can you press this 'demist' button after starting the engine from cold and walk around to the radiator grille and tell us whether you can hear or see the engine cooling fan running.

When the engine is cold remove the expansion tank cap. Look into the tank through the filler neck. Can you see a platform with 'max' written on it? If so, your coolant is low.

When the water pump was "checked" did the garage drain and refill the coolant? If so, they probably didn't do it properly.

Hi Simon

not sure how the garage checked the pump, also I dont have the demist button, just the basic one for the rear window and mirrors.

coolant is about 5mm above the max level with engine cold.

O.K. In that case we can check your engine cooling fan another way. Look at the 'How to ...' for Instrument Pack Diagnostics. This will tell you how to get a digital display of the actual coolant temperature. When it reads 100 degrees your fan should start at the slow speed. The best way to arrange this is to let the engine idle after returning home after a run.

Ok, Im going with the cheaper option first and have a coolant flush and the matrix cleaned out...will keep you posted
