In later petrol engines - late 2001 the fuel filter is known to separate leading to non starts and stalling -the solution is a clip on the filter housing - originally orange in colour and known as the Fabled Orange Clip or FOC from your symptoms not sure that will be the cause but as T Cut suggests if not already fitted get one done.
