Thanks Telfer,

I'll have to drive her to work tomorrow (got a lift today). And will take off the front of the car and look at the intercooler section, as well as all the other pipes etc..... Hope it's relatively dry tomorrow.

check the wastegate actuator hasn't come loose - that could explain no turbo effects too. Saw it on another thread somewhere after lots of other things had been tried...

What in tarnation is a "wastegate actuator" ????? That's a new one on me

The Haynes manual has proved next to useless!!

Tomorrow PM, the front end is coming off (one way or another) and I'll be checking everything I can get to. Pipes, wear & tear, connections, already gor the seals to do Jules' mod. Anything else?

Guess I'm really in the club now -- Took the front end of the car apart today, and got it back together again with only one mishap

And Yes did check for rubbing pipes and wires - none evident,
cleaned the washer pump and reservoir.
And fitted Jules' Inter-cooler O-rings, the lower one was definitely on the way out !!

And tried to fit the Pierburg MAF sensor, but after trying all of my security torx bits, none fitted !! Has anyone got one I can borrow please ? Or point me in right direction to get one?

And the problem?? Only spotted it after I'd taken the plastic engine cover off, someone had forgotten to tighten up the jubilee clip holding the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler !!!!

So when she was put back together I took the masking tape off protecting the bodywork from the bumper and (EXPLETIVE DELETED!!) it took a chunk of paint with it!!!!! Aaargh!!

Anyway took the car out for a spin and coughing and choking for a couple of miles, she settled down, and now seems to be running OK Will find out Sunday, going for a gentle long drive.......

It never rains..........

Must see a paint man on Monday...

Pic 1 = the old O-rings (note the size of the lower one compared to the upper)
Pic 2 = paint damage
Pic 3 = the pipe that had come off is just under and to the right of the valve

Pics are from my phone, so apologise for the pics
