Far as I know it is also available from Land Rover as LNR402. Texamatic 7045E is the later spec. N402

Item 6 is the starter inhibitor switch. Item 1 looks like the filler plug to me. Have you found a supplier of the ATF now? Simon.

No 1 looks like the filler plug, but my memory must be playing tricks. I too thought it was up front near No 6 which is the selector position switch (also known as inhibitor).
Where it's shown on the diagram it would be hidden under the battery, and I'm 99.9% sure it wasn't. |

Thank you for the input chaps. I have settled for the filler being the one near to switch. the level plug was in the form of a hexagon headed bolt.
The nearest Xpart dealer is Kingsbury of Hampton. I phoned them earlier and they can supply the oil but only in five litre containers. As initially I wanted to only "top up" to see if it would clear the problem with the box, I was hoping once solved I wouldn't need such a quantity. To establish that I had the correct level check hole, I took the "plug/bolt" out (whilst cold) and the flow of oil was not stopping after about half a pint, so eventually I replaced this through the filler, and will suspect that once the oil is distributed around the box, the only drainage (if under filled) should be that remaining in the tube above the level plug hole. Would anybody know if there has been a thread on the problems that overfilling may cause, then I could do a search for it? Thank you all for your patience. |

The MG Rover manual says: "The gearbox fluid level must only be checked when the temperature of the fluid is between 35 degrees and 45 degrees C. The reading obtained will be incorrect if the fluid is outside this temperature range." The level plug torque is 14 Nm. Simon.

Thanks for that Simon, I have read on other threads various bits of advice to check the level, but at least I know now where the level plug is, and all I need to do is find a litre of the oil rather than five to do a test with.

I bought five litres of fluid from Kingsbury yesterday, and i'm just waiting for my new drainage bowl to arrive and then i'll replace the whole fluid. I thought I might go the whole hog as it cannot do any harm.

If you wish to be more thorough you can drain and refill once, drive around for a while and then drain and refill again which means that you will have changed 75% of the old fluid but most of us are happy to change once. |

many thanks for that wuzerk, my bowl hasn't arrived and if it doesn't come tomorrow, then I won't be able to do it until late next week. What a blow I was hoping to give her a run this weekend to see if it would solve the slipping problem in 4th and 5th.
